The clock remains ticking on UK – EU negotiations and without an agreement in place before the end of the transition period, UK-EU trade arrangements will revert to WTO rules.
The transition period will end on 31 December 2020, but the EU has insisted that a deal must be negotiated by 31 October, giving it sufficient time for EU parliament and Member State ratification. A draft EU ratification timeline indicates that the EU would like an agreed legal text even earlier, by the beginning of October, to allow time for legal and linguistic revisions.
The September round, beginning 7 September may be the ‘make or break’ moment.
The House of Commons Library have published a useful blog, linked here, which lays out the timeline of the process and major sticking points which will need to be resolved to reach an agreement.
